Recommended Order

Quick answer

  1. Made in Abyss
  2. Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul
  3. Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun

Plus 2 optional extras and 1 upcoming title.

3 titles · 25 episodes + 1 movie · ~12 hours

The story runs straight from the first TV season through the film and into the second season, so this order follows the story rather than reordering it. The two shorts are optional bonus content, and the new theatrical film is not out yet.

Why This Order

Made in Abyss tells one continuous story, so the order genuinely matters. Start with the original TV season, which sets up the world, the cast, and the descent itself.

From there go straight into Dawn of the Deep Soul. This is the part most people get wrong: it is not a recap or a side film but the next chapter, and skipping to the second TV season without it leaves a significant piece of the journey missing. Two earlier films, Journey's Dawn and Wandering Twilight, are recap edits of the first season and are not on this list for that reason.

The Golden City of the Scorching Sun then carries the story deeper, picking up from where the film ends.

The two shorts are entirely optional. Marulk's Daily Life is four light comedic episodes about a supporting character, and Together with Papa is a six-minute bonus tied to the second season. Neither affects the main plot, though the second one reads differently once you have seen Dawn of the Deep Soul.

The theatrical film Awakening Mystery opens in Japan in October 2026 and continues from the end of the second season, so it sits at the end of the list until it is available.

Pick up right after Season 2

Manga Vol. 11 Ch. 61

The second season ends at the close of volume 10, so volume 11 is where to pick up reading. The manga is ongoing and stands at 14 volumes, which means there are four volumes past the anime — and the upcoming film covers ground you can already read. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the English edition, and it is caught up: volume 14 came out on March 31, 2026, with volume 15 scheduled for March 2027. The volume numbering matches the Japanese edition, so there is no offset to account for. Akihito Tsukushi has been releasing roughly one volume a year, so the gap between the anime and the manga is not closing quickly.

What to watch next

If what held you here was the way Made in Abyss puts children in front of consequences it refuses to soften, these are the closest things on the site.

  • Violet Evergarden The other series that treats a cruel setting as something to sit with rather than survive, though it works through the aftermath of violence instead of walking into it.
  • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Shares the willingness to make loss permanent and the escalating-descent structure, but keeps a shonen frame around it that Made in Abyss deliberately refuses.
  • Chainsaw Man For the tonal whiplash instead — another series that puts something soft in the middle of horror and then declines to protect it.

Made in Abyss Watch Order FAQ

Where do I start with Made in Abyss?

Start with the first TV season from 2017. It introduces the world, the characters, and the Abyss itself, and everything after it assumes you have seen it.

Do I have to watch the Dawn of the Deep Soul film?

Yes. It is not a recap or a side story — it picks up the moment the first season ends and covers a major chapter of the main plot. Jumping straight to the second season skips the events the whole season is reacting to.

Are Journey's Dawn and Wandering Twilight worth watching?

Only if you want a refresher. Both are recap edits of the first season with a small amount of new footage — Journey's Dawn covers episodes 1 to 8 and Wandering Twilight covers 9 to 13. Neither adds story, which is why they are not in the order above.

Can I skip the short specials?

Yes. Marulk's Daily Life is four three-minute comedy shorts that screened in Japanese theaters before Dawn of the Deep Soul, and Together with Papa is a six-minute bonus from the second season's Blu-ray. Neither affects the main plot.

Does Made in Abyss have filler episodes?

No. Both TV seasons and the film adapt the manga directly, with original material limited to individual scenes rather than whole episodes. The first season covers volumes 1 to 3, the film covers volumes 4 and 5, and the second season covers volumes 6 to 10.

Is there an English dub?

Yes, for both TV seasons and the film. Sentai Filmworks produced it and the cast is consistent throughout — Brittany Lauda as Riko, Luci Christian as Reg, and Brittney Karbowski as Nanachi, all returning for the second season.

Where can I watch Made in Abyss?

HIDIVE carries both seasons and all three films, subtitled and dubbed. The first season also streams on Amazon Prime Video, though the rest requires the HIDIVE channel. Both seasons aired on Adult Swim's Toonami block in the US. The two shorts are the exception — they have no wide English-language release, so most viewers will not run into them.

How dark does it get?

Considerably darker than the first few episodes suggest. The art style is soft, the story is not, and Dawn of the Deep Soul in particular contains extended sequences of graphic bodily harm involving children. The Toonami broadcast was rated TV-MA.

What is the 2026 film?

Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery, the first entry in a new theatrical series continuing directly from the end of the second season. It opens in Japanese theaters on October 23, 2026. No English-language release date has been announced.

Where do I start reading the manga?

Volume 11. The second season ends at the close of volume 10, and the manga is ongoing at 14 volumes, so there are four volumes past the anime — the upcoming film adapts material you can already read. Seven Seas publishes the English edition and is caught up, with volume 14 out in March 2026.

How long does it take to watch?

The main story is 25 episodes across the two seasons plus the film — about 12 hours. The two optional shorts add around 20 minutes.
