Twenty-four one-minute chibi gag shorts that parody scenes from the TV episodes. Save them for after the series, since the jokes lean on what happens in it.

Why This Order

There are only two pieces to this anime, and one of them is optional. The 24-episode TV series is the whole story: Tatsumi arrives in the capital hoping to earn money for his village, discovers how rotten the Empire has become, and joins Night Raid, a band of assassins working for the Revolutionary Army. Watch it straight through. Be aware that the anime and the manga part ways near the end. The first 19 episodes adapt the manga with some compression, while Episodes 20-24 are an ending written for the anime, so the final stretch does not play out the way it does in the books. The AkaKill! Theater shorts come after the series. Each runs about a minute and retells moments from the TV episodes as chibi gags, so they only work once you have seen what they are poking fun at. None of them affect the story.

Manga Vol. 7 Chapter 33

Episodes 1-19 adapt the manga through Chapter 38, with changes beginning around Episode 18. Episodes 20-24 are anime-original and end the story differently from the manga, which is complete in 15 volumes. Sources place the restart point anywhere from Chapter 33 to Chapter 39; Chapter 33 is the safe choice. The prequel Akame ga Kill! Zero (10 volumes) and the spin-off Hinowa ga Crush! (8 volumes) are also available in English from Yen Press.

What to watch next

Picked for the parts of Akame ga Kill! that tend to hook people: a rebellion against a rotten empire, protagonists who kill for a living, and an anime that takes its own road away from the manga.

  • Code Geass An exiled prince raises a rebel army against the empire that cast him out, running the resistance from behind a mask.
  • Hell's Paradise A shinobi assassin on death row is promised a pardon if he can bring back the elixir of life from a deadly uncharted island.
  • Tokyo Ghoul Another dark series whose second season breaks from the manga with an anime-original story before a later season returns to the source.

Akame ga Kill! Watch Order FAQ

Where should I start with Akame ga Kill!?

Start with Episode 1 of the 24-episode TV series from 2014. It is the only main entry, so there is no prequel or earlier season to watch first.

What is the correct order to watch Akame ga Kill!?

Watch the TV series (24 episodes), then the AkaKill! Theater shorts if you want them. The recommended and chronological orders are the same because the story moves forward in a single timeline.

Do I need to watch AkaKill! Theater?

No. AkaKill! Theater is a set of 24 chibi gag shorts, each about a minute long, that parody scenes from the TV episodes. They add nothing to the story and can be skipped entirely. If you do watch them, do it after the series so the jokes make sense.

Is there an Akame ga Kill! movie?

No. The anime consists of the 24-episode TV series and the AkaKill! Theater shorts. There are no films.

Does the Akame ga Kill! anime follow the manga?

Only up to a point. Episodes 1-19 adapt the manga through Chapter 38, roughly the first eight of its 15 volumes, with changes starting around Episode 18. Episodes 20-24 are anime-original and bring the story to a different conclusion. Later manga arcs, including the Wild Hunt arc, never appear in the anime.

Where should I start reading the Akame ga Kill! manga after the anime?

Chapter 33 in Volume 7 is the safest place to pick up. Sources disagree on the exact point: the anime starts altering the story around Episode 18, and its coverage ends at Chapter 38 with Episode 19, so some guides say Chapter 34 and others Chapter 39. Starting at Chapter 33 means you see every scene the anime changed before the Wild Hunt arc begins. Yen Press publishes the complete 15-volume series in English.

Is there an English dub?

Yes. Sentai Filmworks produced an English dub of the full series, which aired on Adult Swim's Toonami block from August 2015 to February 2016. The main cast includes Corey Hartzog as Tatsumi, Molly Searcy as Akame, Christine Auten as Esdeath and Allison Keith as Leone. With only one season, the dub cast stays the same throughout. The AkaKill! Theater shorts were dubbed as well for the Blu-ray release.

Are there any filler episodes?

Not in the usual sense. Episodes 20-24 are anime-original, but they are the show's ending rather than side stories, so skipping them means skipping the finale. The rest of the series adapts the manga.

Where can I watch Akame ga Kill!?

HIDIVE streams the series with both subtitles and the English dub, and in the US it is also on Hulu. Catalogs differ by region, so check what is available where you live.

Is Akame ga Kill! finished? Will there be a Season 2?

Yes, the anime is finished. It aired from July to December 2014 and ends with its own conclusion. No second season has been announced. The manga is also complete, having ended in 2016 with 15 volumes, but its ending differs from the anime's.

How long does it take to watch Akame ga Kill!?

The 24-episode TV series takes about 9.5 hours. Adding the AkaKill! Theater shorts brings it to about 10 hours.
