Emma, Norman and Ray are the brightest children at Grace Field House, an orphanage where every child is raised with care by the woman they call Mom. One night Emma and Norman learn what the orphanage really is: a farm raising children as food for demons. The three begin planning an escape for everyone before their turn comes.

Quick answer

  1. The Promised Neverland
  2. The Promised Neverland Season 2

2 titles · 23 episodes · ~9 hours

Two seasons, 23 episodes in total. Season 1 adapts the manga's escape arc closely, and Season 2 continues directly from its final scene. There are no anime films or OVAs, so the whole order is just Season 1 followed by Season 2.

1

The Promised Neverland

  • TV Series
  • 12 episodes
  • January 2019

Start here. Twelve episodes covering the children's discovery of what Grace Field House is and their plan to break out. It follows the manga closely and ends on a clean stopping point, so it also works as a complete first act if you plan to continue in the manga.

2

The Promised Neverland Season 2

  • TV Series
  • 11 episodes
  • January 2021

Eleven episodes picking up right after Emma and Ray escape. Watch it if you want the story finished in anime form. If you want the manga's version of what happens next, read from chapter 38 first, because this season goes its own way partway through.

⚠ This season follows the manga only through chapter 52. From the start of the search for William Minerva it is anime-original, skips the Goldy Pond arc entirely, and ends differently from the manga.

Why This Order

The Promised Neverland has only two anime seasons, and Season 2 picks up the night the children cross the wall, so there is nothing to rearrange. The part worth knowing before you start is how the two seasons relate to the manga. Season 1 adapts chapters 1-37 almost scene for scene and ends at a natural break. Season 2 adapts chapters 38-52 in compressed form, then leaves the manga at the start of the search for William Minerva and finishes on an anime-original path. The Goldy Pond arc, one of the manga's longest and most important stretches, is not adapted at all, and the anime's ending is different from the manga's. Season 2 is still the only animated continuation, so watching it is the way to see the story finished on screen. If you would rather have the original version first, you can stop after Season 1 and pick up the manga at chapter 38 in Volume 5. A recap special, Guidepost, aired in Japan between Season 2 episodes 5 and 6. It is not listed here because it only summarizes earlier episodes.

Season 1 ends at chapter 37, partway through Volume 5, so pick up the manga at chapter 38 in the same volume. Start there even if you have watched Season 2: it compresses chapters 38-52, then turns anime-original at the start of the search for William Minerva and skips the Goldy Pond arc entirely. Everything from that point to the ending is material the anime never adapted. The manga is complete at 181 chapters in 20 volumes, and all 20 are available in English from Viz Media. Two short side stories are collected in Kaiu Shirai x Posuka Demizu: Beyond The Promised Neverland (Viz Media, 2022), and a new one-shot for the 10th anniversary ran in Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan on August 24, 2026.

What to watch next

Picked for what makes this series grip: children outthinking a system built to consume them, in a world far darker than it first looks.

  • Made in Abyss Another story where a gentle, storybook art style hides a world that shows children no mercy.
  • Tokyo Ghoul Also a series whose anime left the manga partway through, with the manga as the place to get the full story.
  • Steins;Gate A tense thriller where the characters survive by working out the hidden rules of their situation before it closes in.

The Promised Neverland Watch Order FAQ

Where should I start with The Promised Neverland?

Start with Season 1 (2019). It is the beginning of the story and needs no background. Season 2 (2021) continues directly from its final episode.

What is the correct order to watch The Promised Neverland?

Season 1 (12 episodes), then Season 2 (11 episodes). There are no anime films or OVAs to fit in between, and the chronological order is the same.

How many episodes and seasons does The Promised Neverland have?

Two seasons and 23 episodes: 12 in Season 1 and 11 in Season 2. At about 23 minutes per episode, the whole series takes roughly 9 hours.

Does Season 2 follow the manga?

Only at the start. Season 2 adapts chapters 38-52 in compressed form, then becomes anime-original from the beginning of the search for William Minerva. The Goldy Pond arc is not adapted, and the anime's ending differs from the manga's.

Do I need to watch Season 2?

It is the only anime continuation, so if you want to see the story finished on screen, yes. If you would rather experience the manga's version, you can stop after Season 1 and read from chapter 38 in Volume 5. Watching Season 2 afterward will not change anything in the manga for you, but it does reveal an ending that differs from it.

Where do I start reading the manga after the anime?

Chapter 38, in Volume 5. Season 1 ends at chapter 37. Start there even if you have watched Season 2, because Season 2 compresses chapters 38-52 and then leaves the manga entirely.

What is The Promised Neverland Guidepost special (Episode 5.5)?

A recap special that aired in Japan on February 12, 2021, between Season 2 episodes 5 and 6. It summarizes Season 1 and the first five episodes of Season 2 and adds no new story, so you can skip it. It was not part of the English Toonami broadcast.

Is the live-action Promised Neverland movie part of the watch order?

No. The 2020 live-action film from Toho is a separate adaptation of the manga's escape arc, the same material as anime Season 1. It does not connect to either anime season.

Is there an English dub?

Yes, for both seasons. Aniplex of America produced it with Bang Zoom! Entertainment, and it aired on Adult Swim's Toonami from April 2019 (Season 1) and April 2021 (Season 2). The main cast stays the same across both seasons: Erica Mendez as Emma, Jeannie Tirado as Norman and Laura Stahl as Ray.

Are there any filler episodes?

Not in the usual sense. Season 1 follows the manga closely. Most of Season 2 is anime-original, but it replaces the manga's story instead of padding it, so those episodes cannot be skipped the way filler can.

Where can I watch The Promised Neverland?

Both seasons stream on Crunchyroll, and Hulu also carries the series in the US. Availability varies by region, so check your local catalog.

Is The Promised Neverland finished? Will there be a Season 3?

The anime ended with Season 2's final episode on March 26, 2021, and no Season 3 or remake has been announced. The manga ended in June 2020 with 181 chapters in 20 volumes. The 10th-anniversary projects announced in 2026 include a new one-shot chapter and a stage musical, but no new anime.
