Watch the 12-episode TV series first. It adapts the whole novel and is the complete story. The Other, a single episode released afterwards, is a prequel about Mei, and it gives away details the series holds back until its second half, so it works best once you have finished.
Start here. All 12 episodes cover Koichi's year in Class 3-3 and the whole story of the curse.
A prequel episode about Mei in the days just before the series begins. It reveals things the series keeps hidden until its second half, so watch it after episode 12.
⚠ Released in Japan on May 26, 2012, with the limited edition of volume 0 of the Another manga.
Another is a single 12-episode TV series, and it is the place to start. It follows Koichi Sakakibara from his transfer into Class 3-3 of Yomiyama North Middle School through to the end of the 1998 school year's curse, and it covers the entire novel it is based on.
The Other is set just before episode 1, which is why it is sometimes called Episode 0. It is still placed after the series here. The episode centres on Mei and her private life, and much of what it shows is information the series deliberately withholds and only reveals in its second half. Watching it first takes the edge off one of the mysteries the series is built around.
After episode 12, it plays as a quiet look back at who Mei was before Koichi arrived, and its last scene leads straight into the opening of episode 1.
Another (Anime) has 1 season in the main run — 12 episodes altogether.

The anime adapts the whole of Yukito Ayatsuji's 2009 novel, so there is nothing to continue from. It adds material of its own, including the episode 8 beach trip and much of episodes 11 and 12, and has more deaths than the novel. Two further novels have not been animated: Another Episode S, a side story about Mei set during the same summer, and Another 2001, a sequel set three years later. The original novel and both follow-ups are published in English by Yen Press.
Start with episode 1 of the 12-episode TV series. It is the complete story.
Watch the TV series (12 episodes) first, then the optional prequel episode The Other. In story order The Other comes first, but it reveals details the series saves for its second half.
After. The Other is set just before episode 1 and is sometimes called Episode 0, but it centres on Mei and shows things the series keeps hidden until its second half. Watched afterwards, its last scene leads straight into the opening of episode 1.
No. It adds background on Mei but does not change anything in the series. It was released in Japan on May 26, 2012, with the limited edition of volume 0 of the Another manga.
There is a live-action film from 2012, but no anime film. The anime consists of the 12-episode TV series and The Other.
Yes, it is finished. The TV series ended with episode 12 on March 27, 2012, and adapted the whole novel. No second season has been announced. The sequel novels Another Episode S and Another 2001 have not been animated.
Mostly, up to about episode 7. The anime then adds material: the beach trip in episode 8 is not in the novel, though it leads to an important clue about the curse, and much of episodes 11 and 12 is new. The anime also has more deaths than the novel.
The anime covers the entire original novel, so there is no point to pick up from. For more of the story, read Another Episode S, a side story about Mei during the same summer, and Another 2001, a sequel set three years later. All three novels are available in English from Yen Press.
Not in the sense of skippable episodes. The beach trip in episode 8 is anime-original, but it drives the plot forward, so do not skip it.
Yes. Sentai Filmworks released an English dub in 2013, produced by Seraphim Digital, with Greg Ayres as Koichi and Monica Rial as Mei.
As of September 2026, Another streams on Crunchyroll in the US, including through the Crunchyroll channel on Prime Video. Availability varies by region.
The 12 TV episodes take about 5 hours. The Other adds another 24 minutes.
